The Council of Australian Governments (COAG) held its 23rd meeting in Perth on 2 October 2008. The outcomes from the meeting relating to Indigenous issues are outlined below.
COAG agreed to six targets for closing the gap between Indigenous and other Australians across urban, rural and remote areas. It was determined a meeting would be held in 2009 to develop a national strategy for achieving these targets and provide the opportunity for information exchange and stakeholder contribution.
COAG leaders signed the first National Partnership (NP) covering Indigenous Early Childhood Development. The purpose of the NP is to improve the early childhood outcomes of Indigenous children by addressing the high levels of disadvantage they currently experience, and will include the establishment of 35 Children and Family Centres across Australia.
