Abstract

This report is the first annual performance report for the Indigenous Early Childhood Development National Partnership Agreement (IECD NPA). It provides the latest available information, as well as time trends, on each of the six health-related indicators (of the 10 performance indicators) in the IECD NPA.

The report has chapters on each of the health-related indicators that include detailed data tables and information on methods and data sources:

  • antenatal care
  • teenage rates of sexually transmissible infections
  • low birthweight
  • infant mortality
  • substance use during pregnancy
  • child under five years of age hospitalisation rates by principal diagnosis.

The IECD NPA is a Council of Australian Governments (COAG) agreement established to improve the health and developmental outcomes for Indigenous children across Australia. The IECD NPA is an integral part of COAG's broader agenda to 'close the gap' between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians in health, early childhood education and care, education and employment; and it is also closely aligned with other policies such as Investing in the early years - a national early childhood development strategy.
