This article compares trends in neural tube defects in Western Australian Indigenous and non-Indigenous infants, based on data from the WA Birth Defects Registry. Postpartum interviews with Indigenous women investigated the level of knowledge concerning folate supplementation during pregnancy. Although the findings indicated that folate health promotion strategies have been successful in reducing the risk of the condition in non-Indigenous children, the authors suggest that strategies have proved ineffective in reducing the condition in Indigenous children.
