Abstract

This information resource has been developed to provide mental health professionals with guidance on how to work in a culturally appropriate way with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mothers, fathers, and families during the perinatal period. The topics contained in the resource include:

  • diversity within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures
  • specific issues relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perinatal mental health
  • working sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mothers, fathers, and families in the perinatal period
  • working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers
  • supporting yourself and your colleagues.

The guide also includes a practice checklist, as well as information resources and helplines appropriate for health professionals, and for women and their families. The guide was produced with help from an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander reference group, people with experience of perinatal depression and anxiety, and St. John of God Outreach and Advocacy Services.
