Abstract

This report summarises and develops the findings and recommendations in The roadmap to close the gap for vision: full report released in 2012. It builds on the 2008 National Indigenous eye health survey and various successful eye care programs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.

The report provides brief information on various topics including:

  • the current status of Indigenous eye health
  • co-ordination of eye-care
  • why eye-care is important
  • guiding princliples
  • the patient journey
  • trachoma.

The report highlights the need for increased eye services in remote areas and increased utilisation in all areas. It makes 42 specific recommendations and recommends policy changes to improve the quality and sustainability of eye care services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
