Education programs for Indigenous Australians about sexually transmitted infections and bloodborne viruses

Abstract

This report investigates the efficacy of sexual health education in improving knowledge about sexually transmissible infections and bloodborne viruses among young Indigenous Australians, and whether this leads to attitude and behaviour changes. Categorising education programs in terms of community-based, combined clinical and behavioural, and school-based, the report describes a range of initiatives that have been developed to raise awareness about sexual health among young Indigenous people, and influence behaviour. The report also explores the barriers and facilitators to the successful implementation and maintenance of sexual health programs, such as having an appropriately trained and well-resourced workforce, and ensuring young people have access to health hardware (e.g., condoms).
