Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet abstract

This report was produced following an inquiry by the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs into the contribution of sport to Indigenous wellbeing and mentoring.

The report draws on submissions to the inquiry from 58 sources, including government departments, local councils, and sporting bodies and clubs, as well as on information gathered at six public hearings. It covers:

  • Sport as a vehicle for 'closing the gap'
  • Rates of participation in sport for Indigenous Australians
  • Corporate partnerships, mentoring and culture.

The report makes 11 recommendations, such as:

  • that funding for sport and active recreation for Indigenous women and girls be prioritised
  • that the Commonwealth Government fund Indigenous sports programs over a longer term, preferably a three year cycle.
