The Council of Australian Governments (COAG) held its 14th meeting in Canberra on 25 June 2004. The key discussion points and outcomes from the meeting relating to Indigenous issues are outlined below.
COAG agreed to a National Framework of Principles for Government Service Delivery to Indigenous Australians which will support efforts to improve cooperation in addressing Indigenous disadvantage.
COAG reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the whole-of-government Trials which adopt new ways of working with local Indigenous communities, in eight sites across Australia.
All governments agreed that preventing family violence and child abuse in Indigenous families is a priority for action that requires a national effort. It was noted that jurisdictions will work cooperatively to improve how they engage with each other and work in partnership with Indigenous communities to address this issue under a new National Framework on Indigenous Family Violence and Child Protection.
COAG agreed that progress in promoting reconciliation will be reported on annually by Senior Officials, linking to the arrangements agreed on at the November 2000 COAG meeting.
