Abstract

This policy sets out the framework for providing quality HIV testing and removing real and perceived barriers to testing. The policy identifies requirements and provides guidance regarding procedures for the provision of HIV testing. The policy covers the following topics:

  • types of HIV diagnostic tests (IVDs)
  • indications for HIV testing
  • informed consent for testing
  • conveying HIV test results
  • surveillance and research
  • health care workers
  • antenatal and perinatal testing
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • HIV testing in prison settings
  • post exposure prophylaxis
  • quality assurance of IVDs for HIV testing
  • PoC tests for HIV in community settings
  • home-based testing in Australia
  • funding of HIV testing.

The policy is intended for use by:

  • all health workers who are able to offer HIV testing services
  • other professionals whose work relates to HIV testing, including surveillance staff
  • community-based workers involved in HIV client service delivery and HIV education
  • health promotion and policy or program planners.
