The purpose of Health Workforce Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health worker project was to inform the development of policies and strategies that would strengthen and sustain the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker workforce to deliver care in response to the known burden of disease in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population in Australia. The project ran between May 2010 and December 2011 and used a highly consultative approach to understand the existing challenges that the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health worker workforce faced. The final report provides a clear plan for action to support a strong, valued and sustainable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker profession.
