Western Australian Government

Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia
ALSWA is the largest community based Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander legal organisation in Australia. It provides legal aid services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples throughout Western Australia in accordance with grant conditions imposed by the Commonwealth Attorney General's Department. ALSWA offers a variety of services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Western Australia.

The Department of Health's mission as the principal health authority is to promote, protect, maintain and restore the health of the people of Western Australia. Department of Housing and Works
The Department of Housing and Works is an organisation representing all of the State Government's housing and works functions. The Department covers: Homeswest public housing, Bond Assistance, Community Housing, Aboriginal Housing Government Employees Housing Authority, Country Housing Authority, Keystart Home Loan Schemes, the development and sale of Landstart land in Western Australia, the Office of Policy and Planning, Public Works capital works projects, property and facilities maintenance and services and other major government projects. The Department consolidates the public sector's built environment and the Government's assets and project management with the aim of enhancing the delivery of services in these areas.

Department of Indigenous Affairs - WA
The role of DIA is to ensure that the relevant parts of the broad public sector are working in concert to meet the needs of Indigenous people by acting as a catalyst to mobilise and integrate the resources of Commonwealth, State and Local Government agencies. The Department's mission is to close the gap between the social, cultural and economic well being of Indigenous and non-Indigenous people through strategic leadership of land, heritage and culture, and whole of government coordination of Indigenous issues. Central to achieving this purpose is working in partnership with the Indigenous community of Western Australia.

Office of Aboriginal Health
In 1996, the Department of Health in Western Australia established the Office of Aboriginal Health. Its charter is to work in partnership with Aboriginal communities and health service providers to ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people receive culturally appropriate health care that meets their needs. To achieve this objective, the Office of Aboriginal Health works within government to manage the financial, physical and human resources necessary to improve the health care and health status of all Aboriginal people.

Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS)
The functions of the ABS include the collection, compilation, analysis and dissemination of statistics, the coordination of the statistical operations of official bodies, the development of standards for statistics (and ensuring these standards are met), the offering of advice and assistance on the production and use of statistics and liaison with international organisations on statistical issues. The ABS assists and encourages informed decision making, research and discussion within governments and the community on themes relevant to all regions of Australia including industry, people, economy, environment and energy.

Department of Health and Ageing
The Commonwealth Department of Health was established in 1921 and has since undergone a number of changes in its name function and structure. The changes are briefly outlined, including name changes, Health Ministers and Heads of Department. Following the November 2001 election, Department of Health and Aged Care changed its name to the Department of Health and Ageing. The Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA)
The Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA) is the Australian Government's principal source of advice on social policy and is responsible for about a quarter of the government's budgetary outlays. FaHCSIA works in partnership with other government and non-government organisations in the management of a diverse range of programs and services designed to support and improve the lives of Australians. FaHCSIA, through its Office for Indigenous Policy Coordination, is responsible for coordinating a whole of government approach to programs and services for Indigenous Australians, and has a central role in the Australian Government's arrangements in Indigenous Affairs.

Australian Health Ministers' Advisory Council (AHMAC)
The Health, Community and Disability Services Ministerial Council (HCDSMC) is established under the authority of the Council of Australian Governments (COAG), and comprises the following forums Australian Health Ministers' Conference (AHMC), Australian Health Ministers' Advisory Council (AHMAC), Community and Disability Services Ministers' Conference (CDSMC), Community Services Ministers' Advisory Council (CSMAC), and National Disability Administrators Group (NDAG). The AHMAC internet site has been established to facilitate the work of Members of the Australian Health Ministers' Conference and the Australian Health Ministers' Advisory Council.

The Aboriginal Health Council of Western Australia (AHCWA) replaces the Western Australian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation as the peak body for 19 Aboriginal community controlled health services (ACCHSs) in WA.

Broome Regional Aboriginal Medical Service (BRAMS)
The Broome Regional Aboriginal Medical Service (BRAMS), established in 1978, was the first Aboriginal community controlled health service in the Kimberley region. BRAMS is a primary health care service that is community owned and controlled, and provides holistic, culturally appropriate curative services as well as integrated preventative programs. Other initiatives undertaken by BRAMS over the years include remote area Aboriginal health worker training and the application of information technology in the remote primary care setting.

Bega Garnbirringu Health Service
Established in 1983 as a part time clinic in South Kalgoorlie, BGHSAC has grown and now operates from premises at 16-18 MacDonald Street, Kalgoorlie. "Bega Garnbirringu" means "Sickness Gets Better". The service provides a holistic method of service provision in the health area offering clinical services, health promotion and health education. The mission of Bega Health Service is to provide a holistic and culturally appropriate health care service to the Aboriginal people of the Goldfields.

Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service Inc.
Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation incorporated under the Associations Incorporation Act of 1987. This occurred in 1974 when it was known as Perth Aboriginal Medical Service. The name change occurred in 1998. Derbarl Yerrigan means Swan River Basin in the Nyoongar language. The mission of Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service is to provide holistic, culturally secure health services for Aboriginal people and Aboriginal communities in the Perth metropolitan region. The organisation delivers a range of health services across multiple sites including: GP and dental clinics; ear and eye health programs;a stolen generation program; health promotion activities; Community Aged Care Packages (CACPs);a Chronic Disease Continuous Improvement Project; a Home and Community Care Programme (HACC) a residential care facility for people accessing renal dialysis services and short term medical procedures;a day care centre for frail, elderly or disabled people; a maternal and child health program; and an environmental health program.

Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Service Council (KAMSC)
The Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services Council (KAMSC) Inc is a health resource body for a group of independent Aboriginal community controlled health services (ACCHSs) in the remote Kimberley region of Western Australia. KAMSC was initially formed as a cooperative between the Broome Regional Aboriginal Medical Service (BRAMS) and the Ord Valley Aboriginal Health Service (OVAHS) with membership from the then developing Halls Creek health service committee and Fitzroy Crossing community representatives. KAMSC programs consist of service elements which are pooled among the ACCHSs to improve efficiency, maintain specialised expertise, and address issues of regional coordination and policy.

National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO)
NACCHO is the national peak Aboriginal health body representing Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services throughout Australia. NACCHO represents local Aboriginal community control at a national level to ensure that Aboriginal people have greater access to effective health care across Australia. NACCHO provide a coordinated holistic response from the community sector, advocating for culturally respectful and needs based approaches to improving health and well being outcomes through ACCHSs.

Ord Valley Aboriginal Health Service (OVAHS)
OVAHS is a community based and controlled primary health care service. It provides culturally appropriate curative and public health services for people around the Kununurra township in the East Kimberley. OVAHS provides a comprehensive primary health care service to Aboriginal people in the Kununurra region. Preventative and public health programs include maternal and child health, women's health, chronic disease, sexual health and mental health. Specific health program management is integrated with curative clinic-based work through the application of the Healthplanner computer database. Staff include doctors, Aboriginal health workers and registered nurses.

Yura Yungi Aboriginal Health Service
Yura Yungi is a primary health care service. It is an Aboriginal community controlled health service that provides holistic, culturally appropriate curative services with integrated preventative programs. Preventative and public health programs include maternal and child health, women's health, chronic disease and sexual health. Specific health program management is integrated with curative clinic-based work through the application of the Healthplanner database. Staff include doctors, Aboriginal health workers and registered nurses. Transport is available for those people in need and is part of the outreach function. First aid kits and basic pharmaceuticals are provided to many of the outstations. Yura Yungi manage specialist appointment notification and transport needs to facilitate access to specialist services.

The Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet is an innovative method of making comprehensive, up-to-date knowledge and information accessible to people interested in the health of Indigenous Australians. The site is the main means of disseminating the knowledge and information, much of which is generated by internal research. The Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet also works directly with Indigenous people to improve their use of the Internet, and assists Indigenous and other relevant agencies in making their information accessible.

Kurongkurl Katitjin (KK) is the School of Indigenous Australian Studies at Edith Cowan University. Kurongkurl Katitjin means coming together to learn. KK offers the only external bridging course in Western Australia for Indigenous Australian peoples, and also offers courses in Bachelor of Social Science (Indigenous Services), Bachelor of Arts (Aboriginal Studies), Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer (AIEO), Bachelor of Education (Primary), Graduate Certificate in Indigenous Sector Management, and Master of Arts (Indigenous Sector Management).

The Centre for Aboriginal Studies at Curtin University of Technology aims to promote increased participation of Aboriginal and Islander people in tertiary studies, to ensure this education is culturally appropriate, and to create new ways of learning and working for the benefit of all people. Aboriginal communities throughout Western Australia have input into, and co-operate with, the Centre in working towards these goals. The National Drug Research Institute (NDRI) conducts and disseminates high quality research that contributes to the primary prevention of harmful drug use and the reduction of drug related harm in Australia. NDRI, which was formed in 1986, plays a key role in national harm prevention strategies through research designed to establish the preventive potential of legislative, economic, regulatory and educational interventions. NDRI is located at Curtin University of Technology's Health Research Campus in Shenton Park and receives core funding from the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing.

The Kulbardi Aboriginal Centre is located on the grounds of Perth's Murdoch University. One of Kulbardi's main objectives is to encourage increased participation in tertiary education by Indigenous students. Centre for Aboriginal Medical and Dental Health - University of Western Australia
The Centre was established in 1996 to assist the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry in three main areas: to improve the recruitment and the retention of Aboriginal students in Medicine and Dentristry; to assist the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry with teaching on Aboriginal health issues; and to improve links between Aboriginal organisations and departments within the Faculty. The mission of TICHR is to improve and to promote the health and well-being of all children through the unique application of multidisciplinary research. The aims of the institute are to conduct high quality research, apply research findings to improve the health of children, adolescents and families, teach the next generation of health researchers, and be an advocate for research and for children. Diabetes WA was founded in 1965 to support people living with diabetes. The organisation aims to deliver guidance and reassurance as well as provide information, support and practical advice to effectively manage diabetes and promote an active and healthy lifestyle. The website features services for both community members and health professionals including a phone information line, consultancy service, education, health promotion, fundraising and the bestowal of awards.

FPWA Sexual Health Services
FPWA is a non-government, not-for-profit organisation, and an autonomous member of Sexual Health and Family Planning Australia (SH&FPA) with links to other state and territory family planning associations, the national body SH&FPA (Sexual Health & Family Planning Australia), and to similar organisations in other countries through the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF). The mission of the organisation is to facilitate sexual and reproductive wellbeing for all by recognising the right to information and choice and acceptance of sexuality as integral to health.  FPWA provides sexual health services, information and training for men and women of all ages. Healthway
Healthway provides grants to health and research organisations as well as sponsorships to sport, arts, racing and community groups which encourage healthy lifestyles and advance health promotion programs. Healthway receives approximately $17 million annually to provide sponsorships and grants. Of this health promotion projects and health promotion research grants are each allocated approximately $2.4 million. Additionally Healthway provides more than $8 million per year for sponsorship of sport, arts and racing programs and $1.7 million to support sponsorships.

Heart Foundation
The Heart Foundation is an independent Australia-wide, non-profit health organisation, funded almost entirely by donations from Australians.
