Burgess C (1996) A follow-up study of diabetes in a central Australian Aboriginal community: prevalence, incidence, mortality, hospitalisation & feedback. Unpublished Bachelor of Medical Science thesis, University of Melbourne, Melbourne, Victoria.
The high prevalence of diabetes among Aboriginal people in Central Australia is becoming increasingly evident with continued research. The aetiology of this problem however, is less clear. While cross-sectional studies (a "snapshot in time") provide important data on the prevalence, it is only through longitudinal studies that incidence can be determined and risk factors identified.
Apart from the work of Phillips et al. there is little data on the impact of diabetes on mortality, morbidity and hospitalisations in central Australia and the surrounding aboriginal communities. Diabetes has a large impact on the community and the health care system. Aboriginal people have also become increasingly aware of diabetes and have ranked diabetes and nutritional disorders as their second biggest health concern after alcohol abuse.
