Programs
Indigenous community volunteers
Does your community want to do any projects about caring for kids’ ears and eyes?
Are there people in your community already working in the area of ear and eye health?
Would they like a volunteer to work with them to transfer skills
to them and others in the community?
Indigenous community volunteers (ICV) has joined with Indigenous
people as part of the national focus on reducing the incidence of
eye infections and ear infections (such as otitis media), particularly
in Indigenous children. Healthy ears and eyes give kids a great
chance at school, it makes a difference to the way they can learn.
This early intervention is generally agreed as the best way to address
downstream issues of unemployment and poverty. The Myer Foundation
funding will assist ICV in this focus and used for work with Indigenous
and non-Indigenous leaders, and community people, on their projects
in this area.
Ms Irene Nannup, of the Derbarl Yerrigan Health service in Perth
WA is part of a team working with Clinical Associate Professor Harvey
Coates, from the Clinical Care Unit, at Princess Margaret Hospital.
This team has commenced an Ear Bus project to work with Aboriginal
people in the examination and referral of children who have any
ear or eye concerns needing further attention. The Ear Bus has commenced
its work in WA using a unique spectrometer to diagnose the need
for attention and corrective procedures in children from 0-5 yrs.
These children are then able to be referred to the appropriate Indigenous
health organisation or other specialist for attention. ICV is involved
with this project to increase the knowledge and skills of parents,
guardians and community people in the care of young children's’
ears and eyes to prevent hearing and sight problems arising. ICV
has provided a volunteer to the Ear Bus Project. Ms Adriana Lee
is a graduate of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, USA. Ms Lee is also
a Western Australian and a volunteer with ICV. She traveled with
the Ear Bus assisting with examinations and providing training and
assistance to parents, guardians and community people.
Indigenous Community Volunteers (ICV) has volunteers who want to
work alongside members of your community to increase the skills
and knowledge about care for ears and eyes of young children. They
can work with you on your projects about:
• how to care for kids’ ears and teaching kids to care
for their own ears and eyes
• developing training programs to assist in ear and eye health
in communities and organisations
There are volunteers with skills in :
• Eye health
• Ear health
• Clinical (primary) health care
• Health related and community support services
• Preventative care programs
• Chronic diseases
• Sexually transmitted infections
• Aged care
• Men’s health and women’s health
• Substance use services
• Emotional and social wellbeing
• Pharmaceutical services
ICV staff will help you to complete an application form. They will find you a list of possible volunteers that can come to work with you and your community anywhere in Australia. You can choose the volunteer. ICV covers all the costs of travel and a small living away allowance for the volunteer. The community only needs to provide the volunteer with some accommodation and a cultural mentor for the time they are in the community. There is no cost to the community. The volunteer just needs an invitation.

World Vision Australia
World Vision Australia recognises that Indigenous Australians experience poverty, injustice and social living conditions equal to third world countries, and is therefore committed to assisting Indigenous Australians with the reconciliation process. World Vision has been working with Australian Indigenous communities for many years.
World Vision's Indigenous Partnerships
World Vision runs programs for Indigenous people in the two Northern
Territory communities of Papunya and Epenarra. These programs aim
to promote healthy lifestyles; help build the communities' capacity
to sustain themselves over the long term; support care for the aged;
and increase opportunities for Indigenous youths.
World Vision has been operating programs in the Northern Territory
community of Papunya since 1996 with a focus on health, education
and skills development. Epenarra is the second community where World
Vision is beginning work. In 2003 World Vision will start the early
stages of developing and delivering a program tailored to the Epenarra
community.

Looking after our people: Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) information kit for workers involved in Indigenous health
The Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) information kit has been developed by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing for workers involved in Indigenous health. The primary purpose of the kit is to explain the use of EPC services contained in the Medicare Benefits Schedule, and help increase utilisation of current Medicare items (EPC health assessments, care plans and case conferences) by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The kit contains reports, pamphlets and brochures, that may be of use to medical practitioners, health care providers (including Aboriginal health workers), administrators and patients. The kit provides materials that may be of use to Indigenous health organisations implementing EPC services.

The Quality Assurance for Aboriginal Medical Services program - education, training and quality assurance for point-of-care Haemoglobin A1c testing in Aboriginal medical services
This brochure outlines the importance and benefits of the Quality Assurance for Aboriginal Medical Services (QAAMS) program, developed by Flinders Medical Centre. The program promotes the use of point-of-care technology to support diabetes management in Aboriginal medical services.
The brochure explains that Aboriginal community controlled health services are entitled to a Medicare rebate for each HbA1c test that is performed. This rebate has ensured that the QAAMS program is self-funding and self-sustaining. The brochure has a tear-off section for those interested in joining the program or learning more about it.
