Dr Judith Boswell is Managing Director of Adelaide Hearing
Consultants, a private Audiology consultancy based in South
Australia. She is an Audiologist and a full member of the
Audiological Society of Australia and the American Speech-Language-Hearing
Association and holds clinical certificates from both organisations.
Judith qualified initially as a Speech Pathologist and practised
this profession at the Bendigo Base Hospital for a time before
pursuing studies in Audiology in Melbourne and America (Seattle,
Washington). She obtained clinical experience in providing
diagnostic and rehabilitative hearing services to adults and
children at the Austin Hospital, Melbourne; the HEAR Service,
Adult Deaf Society, Melbourne; and with Australian Hearing,
Sydney. From 1989, Judith was employed as Research Audiologist
with the Menzies School of Health Research in Darwin. During
her five years there, she undertook research into the epidemiology,
aetiology, onset and course of otitis media (OM, or middle
ear infections) in Indigenous Australians. She received her
PhD from the University of Sydney for her research work into
OM and conductive hearing loss in Aboriginal infants in 1994
and was awarded a University prize for her thesis. Judith
has published her Indigenous ear health research findings
in National and International journals and presented her work
at conferences both in Australia and overseas.
During more than three years with the Flinders University
of South Australia, Judith planned and co-ordinated the first
Master in Audiology course to be offered in South Australia.
During this period she maintained her connections with Indigenous
ear health issues through ongoing input to research at the
Menzies School and a research consultancy for Nganampa Health
Council, a community controlled Aboriginal medical service
in northern South Australia.
In 1999-2000, Judith left Adelaide to manage an Ear, Nose
and Throat Outreach Project, based in Cairns. This pilot Project
delivered surgical and audiological services and training
to remote indigenous communities in Cape York, the Gulf of
Carpentaria and the Torres Strait. This Project has continued,
in somewhat altered form, to provide ongoing ENT surgical
services.
Judith returned to Adelaide in late 2000 to manage a private
audiological consultancy and clinical practice where she provides
diagnostic and rehabilitative hearing and tinnitus services
to adults and children. She continues her involvement in Indigenous
ear health issues. In late 2000 she worked with a team to
develop an inter-sectoral collaborative strategic plan for
the provision of hearing services by the Northern Territory
Health and Education Departments. In 2001 she undertook two
weeks of training with health staff working with Indigenous
Australians in the Kimberley, WA. In that year, she also contributed
to the development of guidelines for the provision of audiological
services to Indigenous Australians to guide professionals
new to the field, and consumers.
In 2002 and 2004 she undertook periods of training and clinical
support in Wilcannia, NSW, for Maara Ma Health Service and
also in 2004 and 2005 undertook a training needs analysis
and provided training for Aboriginal Health Workers and Nurses
from remote Northern Territory communities.
Judith is available to talk to professional and community
groups about hearing and hearing disorders and their management
and to provide hands-on skills training in ear examination
and hearing assessment. She is also available to provide clinical
audiological services and training for Indigenous groups and
organisations in rural and remote areas.
