Government organisations

National

Australian Sports Commission (ASC)
The ASC is Australia’s primary national sports administration and advisory agency. The roles and responsibilities of the Commission are laid out in the Australian Sports Commission Act. The Commission is governed by a board of Commissioners appointed by the Australian Government. The ASC promotes an effective national sports system that offers improved participation in quality sports activities by all Australians and helps those who are talented and motivated to reach their potential excellence in sports performance. The ASC achieves this by administering and funding innovative national sporting programs on behalf of the Australian Government and providing leadership, co-ordination and support for the sport sector.

Department of Health and Ageing - Nutrition and Physical Activity Section
As part of the Government's commitment to the prevention of chronic disease the Nutrition and Physical Activity Section of the Population Health Division in the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing is responsible for the promotion of health-enhancing physical activity to improve the health and well-being of the Australian population.

Strategic Inter-Governmental Forum on Physical Activity and Health (SIGPAH)
In 1999, the Strategic Inter-Government forum on Physical Activity and Health (SIGPAH) was established under the auspices of the National Public Health Partnership, as the collaborative body to coordinate a national approach in supporting health-promoting physical activity in Australia. SIGPAH seeks to encourage all Australians to be physically active to improve health and wellbeing. SIGPAH's work will assist the National Public Health Partnership in its aim to protect and promote the health of all Australians.

State and Territory

Department of Sport and Recreation Western Australia
The Department of Sport and Recreation is the lead agency responsible for the implementation of government policy and initiatives in sport and recreation. The Department's purpose is to get more Western Australians physically active, resource and equip sport and recreation providers, support talent development and achievement in sport, promote sound infrastructure planning and sustainable facility provision, and provide affordable recreation camp experiences.

New South Wales Institute of Sport (NSWIS)
The NSWIS was established as a statutory body under the Institute of Sport Act following a review recommending central coordination and monitoring of high performance sports programs. Today the Institute has almost 700 high performance athletes on squad or individual scholarships and offers 28 sport programs. Specialist services ensure that NSWIS athletes have access to leading edge coaching and sports technology while also receiving tailored support to help balance their elite sporting commitments with personal development and a career.

Office for Recreation and Sport South Australia
The Office for Recreation and Sport is the lead agency for the implementation of the South Australian government's policy on recreation and sport. The Office funds sporting and recreation organisations and providers, supports state, regional and local associations, implements policy and programs, leads recreation and sport planning, manages facilities, provides services for elite sport and promotes physical activity in all age groups. Work takes place in three divisions, Planning, Infrastructure and Funding Services, the South Australian Sports Institute, and Recreation and Sport Development.

Premier's Physical Activity Council Tasmania
The Premier's Physical Activity Council is a State Government initiative that works with all communities within Tasmania to get more Tasmanians physically active. The Council consists of members from the community, unions, employers, general practitioners, local government, state government and the sport and recreation industry. The emphasis of the Council is to provide practical and flexible support to all sections of the community and government involved in increasing levels of physical activity.

Premier's Physical Activity Taskforce New South Wales
In May 1996, the Premier established the NSW Physical Activity Task Force to develop a comprehensive strategic plan for the promotion of physical activity in NSW. The Task Force was chaired by Professor Adrian Bauman and included representatives from the following NSW Government Departments: Health, Local Government, School Education, Sport and Recreation, and Urban Affairs and Planning, as well as non-government organisations: National Heart Foundation, Australian Council for Health Physical Education and Recreation (ACHPER), and the fitness industry.

Premier's Physical Activity Taskforce Western Australia
In June 2001 the then Premier, Dr Geoff Gallop, launched the Physical Activity Taskforce to oversee the development and implementation of a whole of community physical activity strategy for Western Australia. The Taskforce comprises senior representation from the Departments of the Premier and Cabinet, Education, Health, Planning and Infrastructure, Sport and Recreation, the Western Australian Local Government Association, Healthway, Lotterywest, a leading academic and a community representative.

Sport and Recreation Northern Territory
The Northern Territory Office of Sport and Recreation, as part of the Department of Local Government, Housing and Sport, is responsible for providing opportunities for Territorians to participate in sport and recreation. Support provided by the Office of Sport and Recreation includes management of major sporting events; elite athlete assistance; grants funding for peak sport and recreation groups, local councils and facility building; the development of sport in schools and Aboriginal communities and management of government-owned sporting facilities.

Sport and Recreation Queensland
Sport and Recreation Queensland is proactively working towards helping Queenslanders become more active. As the lead agency responsible for implementing the Queensland Government's sport and recreation policies, the Organisation works with sporting organisations, councils, schools, Indigenous organisations and the wider community to increase participation, develop better skills in the industry and create better places and opportunities for sport and recreation.

Sport and Recreation Victoria is a division of the Department for Victorian Communities. SRV maximises the economic and social benefits provided to all Victorians by the sport and recreation sectors through ensuring greater access and opportunities for sport and recreation participation by all Victorians; maintaining Victoria's reputation as Australia's leading sporting and major events state; improving the quality of community sport and recreation facilities; strengthening the capacity of sport and recreation organisations; and reinforcing the enriching role that sport and recreation plays in people's lives.

Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS)
The VIS was set up to assist the development of Victoria’s best athletes. It was established in 1990 by the State Government as a private trustee company, with its Board of Directors appointed by the Victorian Minister for Sport. The VIS is funded by the State Government through Sport and Recreation Victoria, the Commonwealth Government through the Australian Sports Commission and numerous corporate sector sponsors. The VIS provides programs in partnership with State Sporting Organisations, and also offers advanced and specialised coaching, sports science and sports medicine services, career and education advice, and training and competition support are provided to VIS athletes, as well as offering emerging elite athletes from country Victoria assistance through Regional Academy of Sport programs.

Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS)
The objectives of the Institute are to provide opportunities for talented Western Australian sportspeople to achieve excellence in high performance sport from within their home environment; provide opportunities for young West Australians to further develop their sporting careers in association with or as a part of their education or work; organise and promote sporting meetings for the purpose of developing the personal skills and levels of excellence of WA's sports people; equip and conduct sport science laboratories to assist the development of sporting excellence; conduct research that will assist the development of sporting excellence; and provide and disseminate sport science information and literature.

Australian Association for Exercise and Sports Science (AAESS)
The AAESS is the peak professional organisation promoting excellence in, and recognition of, tertiary-trained exercise scientists, exercise physiologists and sports scientists who are in turn committed to best practice and client well-being. AAESS was officially founded to meet the professional needs of exercise and sports scientists in Australia. It is directed by an Executive Board comprised of leading academics and practitioners in these fields and is supported by a growing number of regional chapters throughout Australia.

Australian Council for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (ACHPER)
ACHPER is a membership based non-profit organisation, governed by a Volunteer Board comprising professionals from educational and community sectors. It has a strong network of state and territory branches that serve members through a range of professional activities. ACHPER is a national professional association representing people who work in the areas of Health education, Physical education, Recreation, Sport, Dance, Community fitness or Movement sciences.

Australian Institute of Sport (AIS)
The AIS leads the development of elite sport and is widely acknowledged in Australia and internationally as a world best practice model for elite athlete development. The AIS is a pre-eminent elite sports training institution in Australia with world class facilities and support services. Confederation of Australian Sport (CAS)
CAS is the national peak body for sport in Australia. Through the promotion of participation in sport and physical activity, CAS aims to improve the health and well-being of individual Australians; and to maximise the sport and leisure industry’s contribution to the Australian economy. As the peak body for sport, CAS has as its members most of Australia’s National Sporting Organisations, the bodies which collectively represent over seven million Australians.

Fitness Australia is the national voice of the health and fitness industry in Australia and represents the owners and operators of nearly 400 health and fitness centres in Australia and over 12,000 registered fitness professionals. Its national registration program, and supporting continuing education program, ensures there are uniform standards within the health and fitness industry across Australia.

National Heart Foundation Australia
The Heart Foundation is an independent Australia-wide, non-profit health organisation, funded almost entirely by donations from Australians. The Heart Foundation's purpose is to improve the heart health of Australians and to reduce disability and death from heart, stroke and blood vessel disease by promoting and conducting research to gain and apply knowledge about heart, stroke and blood vessel disease, its prevention and treatment; and promoting and influencing behaviour which improves heart and blood vessel health by conducting education and other programs directed at health professionals, those with heart disease, and the Australian community at large.

Since its establishment in 1981, School Sport Australia has been responsible for the development and promotion of school sport in Australia. Centre for Physical Activity in Ageing (CPAA)
The CPAA is a specialised unit of the Hampstead Rehabilitation Centre. The aim of the CPAA is to 'Contribute to the quality of life of individuals through the provision of specialised physical rehabilitation, health promotion, scientific research and educational programs'. The central tenet of the Centre for Physical Activity in Ageing (CPAA) is to contribute to the quality of life of individuals through the provision of specialised physical rehabilitation, health promotion, scientific research and educational programs.

Clontarf Football Academy
The Clontarf Foundation currently has six Academies across the state of Western Australia, for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander boys. Any boy who is enrolled at Clontarf Aboriginal College can apply to be part of the program. To maintain their position in the Football Academy participants need to show commitment towards training and the education program

New South Wales Centre for Physical Activity and Health
The Centre for Physical Activity and Health is a small team of experts in the field of physical activity and public health. The Centre is a new initiative of NSW Health for the period 2002-2005, and has been established in collaboration with the University of New South Wales. It will be located in South Western Sydney Area Health Service, based at Liverpool Hospital. The purpose of the Centre for Physical Activity and Health is provide a centre of excellence for physical activity research, training, evaluation, advocacy and monitoring in NSW, and in doing so, support NSW Health and Physical Activity Taskforce Objectives. It aims to contribute to efforts to increase population wide levels of physical activity.
