National

Department of Health and Ageing
The Department of Health and Ageing seeks to provide better health and healthier ageing for all Australians.
The Department of Health and Ageing pursues the achievement of the Portfolio Outcomes in association with other agencies in the Portfolio. These are the Private Health Insurance Administration Council, the Private Health Insurance Ombudsman, the Professional Services Review Scheme, the Food Standards Australia New Zealand, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare and the Australian Radiation Protection, Nuclear Safety Authority and the Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency.

National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC)
The NHMRC consolidates within a single national organisation the often independent functions of research funding and development of advice. One of its strengths is that it brings together and draws upon the resources of all components of the health system, including governments, medical practitioners, nurses and allied health professionals, researchers, teaching and research institutions, public and private program managers, service administrators, community health organisations, social health researchers and consumers.

National Public Health Partnership (NPHP)
The NPHP provides a formal structure for the Australian Government, and States and Territory Governments, to come together to develop a joint Australian intergovernmental agenda for public health. It operates under a Memorandum of Understanding signed by all Australian Health Ministers.
The National Public Health Partnership Group (NPHPG) is a sub-committee of the Australian Health Ministers' Advisory Council (AHMAC).

Office for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health (OATSIH)
OATSIH was established in the Department of Health and Ageing to give a greater focus to the health needs of Indigenous Australians in mainstream health programs. Following a Government decision to transfer responsibility for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission to the Health portfolio, the Office assumed responsibility for providing funding to Aboriginal community controlled health and substance use services previously administered by ATSIC. The long-term strategy of OATSIH is to improve the access of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to comprehensive primary health care services.

Strategic Inter-Governmental Nutrition Alliance (SIGNAL)
The Strategic Inter-Governmental Nutrition Alliance (SIGNAL) is a sub committee of the National Public Health Partnership, established to coordinate action to improve the nutritional health of Australians. SIGNAL is made up of representatives or nominees of the Australian Department of Health and Ageing; all State/Territory Government Health Departments; the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW); Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ); the National Health and Medical Research Council; and the New Zealand Ministry of Health (with observer status). The committee also includes four independent members with expertise in nutrition and public health. The primary goal of SIGNAL is to provide strategic direction and coordination of national nutrition priorities.

Strategic Inter-Governmental Forum on Physical Activity and Health (SIGPAH)
SIGPAH was established under the auspices of the National Public Health Partnership, as the collaborative body to coordinate a national approach in supporting health-promoting physical activity in Australia. SIGPAH provides national leadership for government action in physical activity and health issues across Australia. SIGPAH comprises representation from all state and territory health departments, the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing, the Australian Sports Commission, and the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. SIGPAH seeks to encourage all Australians to be physically active to improve health and wellbeing. SIGPAH's work will assist the National Public Health Partnership in its aim to protect and promote the health of all Australians.

Childhood Obesity NSW is an initiative of the NSW Department of Health and aims to provide health professionals and the general public with information about childhood obesity. The NSW Department of Health is responsible for ensuring that the people of NSW are provided with the best possible health care. The Department monitors the performance of the NSW public health system and supports the statutory role of the NSW Minister for Health.

Australian and New Zealand Obesity Society
The Australian and New Zealand Obesity Society (ASSO) is a scientific organisation of medical practitioners, dietitians, scientists and other health care professionals interested in obesity research, treatment or public health initiatives directed at the prevention of obesity. The Society has members throughout Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Region, and is a full member of the International Association for the Study of Obesity (IASO), which gives a combined representation to over 11,000 professionals in 50 national obesity associations throughout the world.

Dieticians Association of Australia (DAA)
DAA is the national Association of the profession, with branches in each State and Territory. The precursor of DAA, the Australian Association of Dietitians, was established in 1976. The Association became known as DAA in 1983. DAA represents approximately 3,000 members. Dietitians are employed in a wide variety of work areas including clinical dietetics, community nutrition, education, private sector, government, research and industry.

Endocrine Society of Australia
The Endocrine Society of Australia is a national non-profit organisation of scientists and clinicians who conduct research and practice in the field of Endocrinology. The society was founded in 1958 and incorporated in 1986 in the State of Victoria. The Society is governed by the 8 members of its Council who are elected every two years by a ballot of the membership in accordance with the Constitution.

Obesity Surgery Society of Australia and New Zealand (OSSANZ)
OSSANZ started in 1980 with a meeting in South Australia of health professionals from New Zealand and Australia interested in the surgical treatment of severe obesity and has continued to meet since to discuss developments in this type of surgery. OSSANZ welcomes as members any health professional working in the field of surgical treatment of obesity including physicians, dietitians and nurses. OSSANZ is a foundation member of the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity which now has 31 member countries.

National Heart Foundation Australia
The Heart Foundation is an independent Australia-wide, non-profit health organisation, funded almost entirely by donations from Australians. The Heart Foundation's purpose is to improve the heart health of Australians and to reduce disability and death from heart, stroke and blood vessel disease by promoting and conducting research to gain and apply knowledge about heart, stroke and blood vessel disease, its prevention and treatment; and promoting and influencing behaviour which improves heart and blood vessel health by conducting education and other programs directed at health professionals, those with heart disease, and the Australian community at large.

Nutrition Australia is a non-government, non-profit, community based-organisation with offices in all states and territories. Nutrition Australia is an independent body that aims to promote the health and well-being of all Australians. Nutrition Australia has had a long history working in public health nutrition; as a key nutrition information body for State and Commonwealth Health Departments; working extensively in the area of nutrition for children, adolescents, and older Australians in nursing homes or in their own homes; and the media.

The Nutrition Society of Australia is a group of qualified, practicing scientists and educators from divergent disciplines who are brought together by a common interest in the research and application of nutrition. The Society meets locally and nationally at an Annual Scientific Meeting to discuss specific scientific topics. The Eating Disorders Association Queensland is a non-discriminatory, non-profit organisation. The Eating Disorders Association is funded by the Statewide Health and Non-Government Services Unit of Queensland Health, to provide information, support and referral services for the state of Queensland, Australia. This Association holds the belief that eating disorders are complex, multi-faceted illnesses which require a multidimensional approach to care and support.

The Eating Disorders Association of South Australia is a not for profit community organisation established with the aim of providing information and support to people with eating disorders, their friends and families as well as to better inform the community of the effects of these conditions. International organisations

European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO)
Established in 1988, EASO has more than 2500 members in 27 countries. Members come from a wide range of professions including sports specialists, dieticians, doctors and scientists. EASO aims to promote research into obesity, facilitate contact between individuals and organisations, and promote action that tackles the epidemic of obesity. In 2001, EASO launched three task forces, one on Public Health and Prevention, one on Obesity Management and one on Childhood Obesity.

FOE - Fight the Obesity Epidemic
FOE is a voluntary organisation that advocates to influence policy changes to stop the rise of Type 2 diabetes and obesity in children. FOE's vision is to halt and reverse current increases in obesity and associated health problems in New Zealand. FOE was founded in 2001 at a meeting of the International Diabetes Federation and World Health Organisation in Kuala Lumpur.

International Obesity Taskforce (IOTF)
The IOTF is a global network of expertise, a research-led think tank and advocacy arm of the International Association for the Study of Obesity. The IOTF is working to alert the world to the growing health crisis threatened by soaring levels of obesity. It works with the World Health Organization, other NGOs and stakeholders to address this challenge. The IOTF's mission is to inform the world about the urgency of the problem and to persuade governments that the time to act is now.

International Organisation for the Study of Obesity (IASO)
IASO is an umbrella organisation for national associations which comprises 49 Member Associations, representing 53 countries. As a non-government organisation, IASO collaborates with the World Health Organisation and other NGOs including the International Diabetes Foundation, the World Heart Federation, the International Union of Nutritional Sciences, the International Paediatric Association and the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity.
