This movie can be used as a diabetes educational tool and may be particularly useful for those with low medical literacy levels. The movie plays in macromedia flash and is available in three Central Australian languages (Pitjantjatjara, Warlpiri, Arrernte) as well as English. It can be downloaded for use by practitioners, clinics and Aboriginal clients.

"That diabetes" - tackling it together [DVD - documentary]

This documentary is the work of Aboriginal film makers. It covers the tragedy of Indigenous diabetes-stricken dialysis patients in an Alice Springs hospital through to the hope and inspiration of how a group of Aboriginal women have begun beach walking on the remote northwest coast of Australia to help avoid the onset of diabetes.

The Indigenous Diabetic Foot Program [various resources]
Canberra: Services for Rural and Remote Allied Health

Services for Australian Rural and Remote Allied Health (SARRAH) have developed a CD-ROM on diabetic foot problems for Indigenous people. The CD contains a series of short video clips, photos and documents to embrace the goal to assist with the early identification and management of the diabetic foot.

Additional educational resources include a magnet, educational card set/flip chart, two videos on foot care management, choice of two A3 posters and a 'dart chart screening form' suitable for Indigenous communities. SARRAH is a not-for-profit incorporated organisation and uses the income from the sale of IDF resources to maintain the stock of resources and to develop new resources.

The Chronic Diseases Network has developed a Useful resources directory that provides a list of available resources categorised according to condition. The resources have either been designed specifically for Aboriginal people, or could easily be adapted. The guide provides general information, contact details, and online information for obtaining each resource. The guide has been developed into an online health education resource database to provide a one-stop shop for information to assist with the prevention and management of various health issues affecting the Aboriginal community.

Western Australian Diabetes Strategy (2005)

In 2003, the Health Promotion Directorate, in collaboration with the Office of Aboriginal Health undertook a project that aimed to increase the knowledge of Aboriginal people about the signs of type 2 diabetes, and to encourage Aboriginal people to undertake preventive behaviours for type 2 diabetes. The project resulted in the production of two resources, an information pamphlet and a related interactive word puzzle. A quantitative evaluation of these resources was conducted in 2005, supporting the production and distribution of both the resources, and the possible future development of a similar pamphlet addressing 'Heart Health'.

This video on diabetes was produced by Bega Garnbirringu Health Services Aboriginal Corporation, and funded by the Western Australian Office of Aboriginal Health and Department of Health.

The 14 minute video is accompanied by an explanatory booklet which outlines the different types of diabetes, symptoms, management, associated complications and methods of sugar level testing. The video contains 'Wongutha language', the meaning of which is provided in the booklet. Information about Bega Garnbirringu Health Services Aboriginal Corporation is also provided. The video is a useful resource for Aboriginal health workers and service providers in a variety of settings. Copies of the video can be ordered from the organisation.

Designed and produced by Koorie Diabetes Services Victoria, the brochure contains colourful Indigenous artwork, and can be used by health workers and service providers working with Indigenous women at risk of developing gestational diabetes. This brochure outlines the importance and benefits of the Quality Assurance for Aboriginal Medical Services (QAAMS) program, developed by Flinders Medical Centre. The program promotes the use of point-of-care technology to support diabetes management in Aboriginal medical services.

The brochure explains that Aboriginal community controlled health services are entitled to a Medicare rebate for each HbA1c test that is performed. This rebate has ensured that the QAAMS program is self-funding and self-sustaining. The brochure has a tear-off section for those interested in joining the program or learning more about it.

'Sugar' - a video about diabetes by and for Aboriginal people [video]

Produced by the South Western Sydney Area Health Service, 'Sugar' is a video that focuses on community people telling their stories about diabetes in a humorous way. It covers the participants' personal experiences of how they discovered they were diabetic, and the changes they have made to manage the illness. The video encourages people to take control of their condition. It includes educational material which is presented in an easy-to-understand style, and has been developed with input from dieticians, doctors, and health workers.
