Exhibition: Listen to the Land

Edith Cowan University in Perth is the home of a substantial Aboriginal art collection, the exhibition Listen to the Land brings together for the first time more than 100 paintings, prints, bark paintings, carvings, sculpture, artefacts and textiles from the University's Aboriginal Art Collection.

The collection is funded by ECU's Curatorial Services and Kurongkurl Katitjin, School of Indigenous Australian Studies. Guest curator Annette Davis worked with Karen Mallard from Kurongkurl Katitjin in the development of the interpretative support material for the exhibition.

These traditional and contemporary items demonstrate the range of styles from more than 20 locations, including the Kimberley, the South-west, the Central Desert, Arnhem Land, Melville and Bathurst Islands, and the cities of Melbourne, Sydney and Perth.

Aboriginal art has always changed and adapted over time and will continue to do so. Different communities have developed particular styles influenced by the natural resources around them, by people with whom they have come in contact, and by the art materials and techniques which became available to them.

Listen to the Land brings together some of the fascinating styles of Aboriginal art. The exciting diversity and quality of the works in this exhibition are a powerful statement of the richness and strength of Aboriginal culture in Australia today.
