Health promotion resources

Jag Films Pty Ltd (no date)
Birth rites [video]
Margaret River, Western Australia: Jag Films Pty Ltd

Birth rites is a one hour documentary drawing a comparison between birth issues in outback Australia and regions of arctic Canada. The interface between the two worlds of Indigenous culture and western medicine becomes problematic when women in remote towns are sent away from home and family to give birth in centralised hospitals. The content reveals the effect birthing issues have on the women, and their families and communities.

Bringing them home.
Sydney: Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission

Released in December 2003, Bringing them home is an education module based on the findings and recommendations of the Bringing them home report, undertaken by the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from their Families.

The education module, developed by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunities Commission, has been designed to help students explore:

  • the history, laws and practices of forcible separation
  • the effects of separation on individuals, families, and communities
  • the recommendations aimed at healing the pain caused by separation
  • responses to the Bringing them home report since it was published

This interactive CD-ROM contains resources, worksheets, teaching strategies, and curriculum links for use in Australian classrooms. It was created in consultation with experienced curriculum developers and is primarily for use at junior (years 6-8) and senior (years 9-11) education levels

2003

Charles Darwin University, Cooperative Research Centre for Aboriginal and Tropical Health (2003)
Yalupuy Dhawu: the story of Yalu.
Casuarina: Cooperative Research Centre for Aboriginal and Tropical Health

The story of Yalu has been produced on CD-ROM by the Teaching and Learning Service at the Northern Territory University in conjunction with the Cooperative Research Centre for Aboriginal and Tropical Health, and Yalu' marngithinyaraw (the learning nest), a community organisation in Galiwin'ku. Yalu' marngithinyaraw was established to develop and deliver programs based on research into the links between health and education.

The CD-ROM evolved from an earlier project undertaken by the Cooperative Research Centre for Aboriginal and Tropical Health - 'Yolngu theories of transformation' - that explored Yalu' marngithinyaraw as a case study of Yolngu leadership. The project's principal investigator was Joanne Garngulkpuy, a former teacher and now an experienced community researcher.

The CD-ROM uses audio, video and photo material from extensive archives to cover the organisation's history, philosophy, strategy and activities. The 'philosophy' section features six elders from different clans of the Dhuwa and Yirritja moieties explaining their meanings for 'Yalu' marngithinyaraw'.

Information about the CD-ROM can be obtained from the Yalu website, or from the CD summary sheet (PDF - 12KB). For further information about the CD or for copies contact: Michael Christie, Charles Darwin University, Darwin NT 0909, ph: (08) 8946 7043, email:michael.christie@cdu.edu.au.

'My body belongs to me'. An awareness-raising video for Aboriginal communities.
Perth: Department of Indigenous Affairs.

The 'My body belongs to me' project, has been developed in close association with Indigenous community organisations and government service providers. The project is the first of its kind in Western Australia to break the silence on sexual abuse in Indigenous communities. The WA Department of Indigenous Affairs (DIA) won the overall 2002 Premier's Award for Excellence in Public Sector Management, for the project.

The video has been designed to encourage Indigenous people to talk about sexual abuse and bring their experiences out in the open. It strives to remove the associated secrecy of sexual abuse and publicly acknowledge this issue as one that has resulted in much grief in the Indigenous community.
