The Australian Council for the Arts has released a fully revised second edition of its protocol guides to help Australians better understand the use of Indigenous cultural material. Doing the right thing: protocols for working with Indigenous arts cover Indigenous Australian media arts, music arts, performing arts, visual arts and writing. The guides are also created to help Indigenous artists know how to best protect their work and their culture.

The booklet has been developed by the Department of Industry and Resources (DOIR) to improve communication between Aboriginal people and resource developers in remote and rural areas, with a view to reducing unnecessary delays and conflict. The booklet covers issues relating to approaching communities, arranging meetings, facilitating discussions, and protecting Aboriginal heritage, as well as aspects relating to Aboriginal culture such as native title, kinship, taboos, funerals, and law business.

National Palliative Care Program (2004)
Providing culturally appropriate palliative care to Indigenous Australians [kit]

Funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing as part of its National Palliative Care Program, this resource kit has been developed to support the provision of palliative care to Indigenous patients, their families and communities, and to encourage service providers to examine their practice for cultural appropriateness. The kit is the result of direct consultation with palliative care providers and Indigenous people and communities throughout Australia. It contains a folder with information addressing: an introduction to the kit; practice principles; use of the resource; discussion paper; and course information. A cd-rom is also included and contains additional information relating to cultural safety, cultural diversity, and practice examples.

A 'Cultural mentor handbook' and 'Suggested guidelines for the development of Indigenous cultural mentors'

The importance of cultural mentoring was highlighted in a national needs assessment of the support and training needs of GPs and GP registrars working in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. These resources were developed in response to the project findings. The project team, from the Centre for General Practice and Rural Medicine at James Cook University, Townsville, worked with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups in North Queensland to set up a network of cultural mentors in the region.

The Cultural mentor handbook provides information for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are acting as cultural mentors for GPs and medical students in North Queensland. The second resource, Suggested guidelines for the development of Indigenous cultural mentors, covers the role, selection process, qualifications, remuneration, training, and support requirements for cultural mentors.

The Yalu Story has been produced on cd-rom by the Teaching and Learning Service at the Northern Territory University in conjunction with the Cooperative Research Centre for Aboriginal and Tropical Health, and Yalu' marngithinyaraw (the learning nest), a community organisation in Galiwin'ku. Yalu' marngithinyaraw was established to develop and deliver programs based on research into the links between health and education. The cd-rom covers the organisation's history, philosophy, strategy and activities. The 'philosophy' section features six elders from different clans of the Dhuwa and Yirritja moieties explaining their meanings for 'Yalu' marngithinyaraw'.

It demonstrates young and older people working together towards a better understanding of different cultures. The cd-rom includes interviews and recorded music. It contains a self-loading powerpoint slide show presentation suitable for PCs. Visual cues are contained in the slide show to assist navigation.

This CD, produced in the Gapuwiyak community, is designed to provide medical practitioners with a useful working knowledge of the Yolngu language. The CD provides a core vocabulary of useful clinically-relevant Yolngu words. It also considers: key structural differences between English and the Yolngu language; cross-cultural issues regarding the delivery of culturally sensitive health care to traditional Aborigines; contacts and resource listings; and photographs of East Arnhem landscapes and Yolngu portraits accompanied by specially composed background music.

The videos are an interactive resource for educators and are accompanied by detailed guidelines for use. It is recommended that advice regarding the use of the videos be sought from NACCHO representatives in each state and territory.
