Certificate 2 in Indigenous Driver Education

Description

This course in Indigenous Driver Education is aimed as an intervention program for all Indigenous people across the country as an alternative to people facing jail time.

The following units have been developed for the course:
1. Apply General Driving Practices.
2. Deal with all traffic issues.
3. Develop roadcraft skills.
4. Develop self esteem through Cultural Awareness.

Lessons learned

Research and the Judicary have identified that large numbers of the Indigenous population are incarcerated as a result of traffic-related matters.

Safe Koori Kids: Community Based Approaches to Indigenous Injury Prevention

Description

The project is to develop and evaluate a safety program for Koori kids, their families and schools. Road safety is one of 5 safety topic areas.The program aimed to build Aboriginal family and community resilience and promote child safety.

Lessons learned

We are now in the third year of our project. A school based program has been developed and trialled in 12 primary schools in SW Sydney. We are currently writing up the results of the evaluation.
