The Road Safety Research Grants Program funds one-off research projects proposed by the community. It complements the Department’s research program and aims to encourage researchers from a broad range of scientific disciplines to consider road safety research.
Each year, grants of up to $30,000 (including GST) are made available for original road safety research projects that can be completed within 12 months. There usually is keen competition for these grants.Grants are advertised towards the end of November each year, with applications due the following February.

Black Spot programs target those road locations where crashes are occurring. By funding measures such as traffic signals and roundabouts at dangerous locations, the program reduces the risk of crashes. The Black Spot program began in 1996-97. In April 2007, the Australian Government extended the programme until 30 June 2014.

The Government of Western Australia has made funds available from the Road Trauma Trust Fund to assist in the development of road safety projects. These funds are made available through the Road Safety Council. The road safety projects eligible to apply have to be aimed at fostering widespread community support and participation throughout the State to prevent road crashes causing serious injury and death.
Grants are available for projects that focus on key behaviours or risk factors that are the major contributing factors to road crashes in WA and align to the key classes of initiatives described in Arriving Safely, the WA Road Safety Strategy 2003-2007. (View strategy - PDF - 886KB)
Grants are available on a monthly basis with applications closing on the first Friday of each month and determined on the third Friday of the same month.
