In this report, background information is presented on nutrition and nutrition-related disease in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the report is specifically aimed at practitioners working to improve the nutritional health of these populations. The first section of the report provides an overview of the current situation in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and nutrition through demographic and health data, factors that have had an impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nutrition and reviews of health promotion initiatives. The second section outlines the importance of proper nutrition during pregnancy, infancy and childhood. In the third section, nutrition related diseases of particular relevance to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, renal disease and dental health problems are addressed.
