National Organisations

Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology Incorporated
The Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology is a national association representing individuals from all areas of the Australian food and allied industries, with a purpose to expose aspects of the agrifood sector. The Institute is a member of the International Union of Food Science and Technology Organisations (IUFoST). It is managed by a National Council, and supported by State Branch Committees which are democratically elected from and by members on an annual basis. AIFST has a strong reputation for facilitating food learning, networking and communication regardless of company size, industry segment or professional qualification. AIFST continues to strive for improvement in all its functions, with the aim of maximising professional standing and opportunity for all its members.

Australasian Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (AuSPEN)
The Australian Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (AuSPEN) is a multidisciplinary society focusing on Clinical Nutrition. The membership basis includes physicians, surgeons, intensivists, dietitians, pharmacists, nurses and scientists from Australia, New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific region. The society aims to encourage knowledge enhancement and professional competence in the field of nutrition support, promote an evidence-based approach to nutrition in clinical practice, encourage membership involvement in research and its dissemination, provide clinical nutrition expertise in an advisory capacity to government bodies, other nutrition organisations and health professionals and act as an advocate for patients requiring nutritional support.

Diabetes Australia
A non-profit organisation reliant on community support. All funds raised on behalf of the organisation are re-invested into research, health services, provision of self-management products and services, and public awareness. It offers personalised and practical assistance to benefit people with diabetes and their carers and provides a forum for the development of national policies. Branches are available in each Australian State.

Dietitians Association of Australia
The Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) is the national association of the profession, with branches in each State and Territory. The purpose of the organisation is to support members and to advocate for better food, better health, and better living for all Australians. Dietitians are employed in a wide variety of work areas including clinical dietetics, community nutrition, education, private sector, government, research and industry. The Board of DAA is responsible for the management of the association's affairs.

Food and Nutrition Australia (FNA)
Food and Nutrition Australia (FNA) a team of Accredited Practising Dietitians providing professional nutrition services and advice on all aspects of nutrition such as a healthy lifestyle or effective strategic advice for industry or a media comment. The organisation keeps clients up to date with the latest trends in nutrition, research and food and lifestyle issues, so that it can confidently communicate with and advise clients.

Food Science Australia
Food Science Australia is a national food, health and nutrition research organisation and a joint venture of CSIRO and the Victorian Government. The main purpose of the organisation is to deliver innovative solutions for the food industry, and to support the health and well-being of consumers in Australia and overseas. The organisation seeks to be the food industry's principal source of expertise, objective opinion and knowledge, and strives to support industry sustainability and community well-being.

National Heart Foundation
The Heart Foundation is an independent Australia-wide, non-profit health organisation, funded almost entirely by donations from Australians. It has been fighting heart disease in Australia for nearly 40 years and first began as a voluntary organisation of doctors. In 1961 a very successful 'Heart Fund Campaign' was conducted from which money was raised to establish offices in each state of Australia. Since then the Heart Foundation has established itself as one of the leading health agencies in Australia in the fight against heart disease.

National Rural Health Alliance
The National Rural Health Alliance (NRHA) consists of 26 member bodies representing both health consumers and service providers in non-metropolitan areas. It is a principle organisation working to improve the health of Australians in rural and remote areas.

Nutrition Australia
Nutrition Australia is an independent, community nutrition education body which provides scientifically based nutrition information to encourage all Australians to achieve optimal health through food variety and physical activity. The organisation has a strong focus in public health nutrition and is a key nutrition information body for state and commonwealth health departments. Other key areas of focus include working extensively in the area of nutrition for children, adolescents, and older Australians in nursing homes or in their own homes; and the media. Nutrition Australia operates through a National Council who is responsible for policy and national programs.

Nutrition Society of Australia
The Nutrition Society of Australia is a group of qualified, practising scientists and educators which meet locally and nationally to discuss the science of nutrition. The society is represented across Australia by regional groups and managed by a National Executive. The main focus of the organisation is based around the mutual scientific support of members and the science of nutrition.

Smart Foods Centre
Part of the University of Wollongong, this unit is involved in research examining the relationship between dietary intake and health/disease with a particular emphasis on the metabolic syndrome (obesity, type II diabetes mellitus and gestational diabetes mellitus). Studies focus on functional foods, the feasibility and acceptability of dietary interventions and the role of nutrition professionals in influencing dietary change. Diet history, food frequency and dietary recall techniques are used and the results interpreted by experts to underpin many of the human physiology and diet intervention studies. The research program examines the feasibility of manipulating macronutrients in the overall diet for metabolic effects.

Strategic Inter-Governmental Nutrition Alliance (SIGNAL)
The Strategic Inter-Governmental Nutrition Alliance (SIGNAL) is a sub committee of the National Public Health Partnership and has a primary goal to provide strategic direction and coordination of national nutrition priorities. SIGNAL is made up of representatives or nominees of: the Australian Department of Health and Ageing; all State/Territory Government Health Departments; the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW); Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ); the National Health and Medical Research Council; and the New Zealand Ministry of Health (with observer status). SIGNAL plays a major role in coordinating the implementation of the national nutrition strategy, ‘Eat Well Australia: a national framework for action in public health nutrition, 2000–2010', which includes an action plan for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. These and other initiatives are designed to address the major nutritional challenges within Australia 's National Health Priority Areas including cardiovascular health, diabetes and cancers.

Healthy Living NT
Healthy Living NT (HLNT) is the trading name of the Diabetes Association of the NT. The organisation is a member of the Good Health Alliance NT (GHANT), a coalition of Northern Territory chronic disease non government organisations and a member of the federation of Diabetes Australia. West Australian Diabetes Strategy
An initiative of the WA Department of Health, The West Australian Diabetes Strategy involves the planning and delivery of diabetes prevention and management. The website has a range of diabetes related information and resources in WA. The site is directed at both consumers and health professionals and contains a section on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander services.

American Dietetic Association (ADA)
The American Dietetic Association offers a website contributing nutritional tips, membership, conference up-dates and advice for nutritionists and the general public. The ADA is America's largest organisation of food and nutrition professionals. ADA serves the public by promoting optimal nutrition, health and well-being.

British Dietetic Association (BDA)
The BDA was formed to provide training and facilities for registered dietitians. Today the Association has developed into a professional association which aims to inform, protect, represent, and support its members. Most are qualified dietitians holding a degree or post-graduate diploma recognised for registration by the Health Professions Council.

New Zealand Nutrition Foundation
The New Zealand Nutrition Foundation is a non profit organisation whose mission is to "enhance the quality of life of New Zealanders by encouraging informed, healthy and enjoyable food choices as part of an active lifestyle". The New Zealand Nutrition Foundation works pro-actively in the nutrition and food sectors with the food industry, Ministry of Health, other health promotion agencies, schools and the media and is well respected as a credible voice on nutrition issues. An independent Scientific Advisory Committee ensures the academic excellence of the Foundation's deliberations and that scientific information is translated into a form that is easily understood by the lay person.
