Donna Lei Rioli
Donna Lei Rioli is a young Tiwi/Nyungar woman who is dedicated to the heritage and culture of the Tiwi people on her father's side, Maurice Rioli, and the Nyungar people on her mother's side, Robyn Collard. Her father and grandfather's country is at Wulawunga on Melville Island north of Darwin. Her father's language is the Tiwi language. Donna's family and networks stretch throughout the length and breadth of the Tiwi Islands . Donna's Tiwi dreaming is that of the turtle or tutakalani. Her Tiwi heritage can be shown through her artwork depicting the tutakalani with the balga bush as the centrepiece of her Nyungar artwork. Donna enjoys painting because it enables her to express her Tiwi and Nyungar heritage and combines the two in a unique way.
The tutakalani (turtle)
Donna says, "I like to paint the tutakalani or turtle because it is symbolic of my Tiwi culture and it also represents my dreaming".
