Ear & hearing health management training (Northern Territory)

The Department of Health and Community Services in conjunction with the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing is offering the following training to Aboriginal Health Workers with particular focus on community activities for the 0-5 year age group.

Participants will learn about::
• the impact of conductive hearing loss on the communication and language development of infants and young children;
• talking to parents, all other family members and teachers on the problems of otitis media and the impact of the resulting hearing loss on the infant and child’s language learning and education;
• skills to diagnose middle ear disease in babies and children and to treat as outlined in the CARPA manual;
• ideas for regular checking of babies and small children for otitis media and hearing loss and referral pathways
• using and developing community ear health and hearing promotional materials;
• otoscopy skills and techniques
• developing and planning for community based ear health programs and promotion
• ear health and hearing programs using a community based multidisciplinary team approach

Travel and accommodation is funded through this program so there is no cost to participating AHW’s employers.
