Hearts in Focus: Celebration, Collaboration and Challenges - Heart Foundation Conference 2009

The Heart Foundation is the leading organisation in the fight against cardiovascular disease in Australia. The Heart Foundation have announced the second Heart Foundation Conference to be held in Brisbane, Queensland from 14-16 May 2009.
The conference will provide a perfect opportunity for leading international and national presenters to showcase key clinical, research and public health issues surrounding cardiovascular disease in the 21st century.
This conference is set apart from the rest by providing a focus on prevention, early intervention, treatment and rehabilitation in one world-class forum.
Delegates will be brought together across the continuum of care from epidemiology, genetics, prevention, health promotion, basic science, diagnosis, treatment / intervention and ongoing prevention and management.

Study to improve treatment services to Indigenous people with heart disease
The following information has been adapted from information provided by ABC news.
Researchers from Curtin University in Perth have embarked on a three year study to improve heart disease treatment services to Indigenous people.
The study, lead by Sandra Thompson from the University’s Centre for International Health will be examining hospital data about the treatment of Aboriginal people with acute heart disease symptoms. Researchers will also speak to people who have been treated for heart disease in order to learn more about how they managed their symptoms.
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among Indigenous Australians with a death rate 3 times higher than those of other Australians.

Just Walk It
Just Walk It is a National Heart Foundation community based walking program that aims to improve the physical activity levels of participants. The program offers a qualified fitness instructor who teaches participants the correct way to stretch including a thorough warm up and cool down. The program is currently offered in 6 locations within the Northern Territory.
Walkers meet weekly at the local shopping centre and alternate between walking through the centre and utilising the many walking points that the suburbs have to offer.
Katherine – Runs Tuesdays from 8am-9am. Participants meet in the Katherine Oasis Shopping Centre. The program is sponsored by the Katherine Terrace Café and the YMCA and the Katherine Town Council
Nhulunbuy - Runs Tuesday from 9am-10am. Participants met at the Munch n Crunch café. The program is sponsored by the Munch n Crunch café, the Arnhem club gym, the Neighbourhood Centre and Nhulunbuy Corporation
Darwin – Runs Fridays from 7.30am – 8.30am. Participants meet at the Mitchell Centre information desk. The program is sponsored by the Coffee Club, Bakers Delight, The Mitchell Centre and Darwin City Council. The most popular walking route is along the Esplanade
Palmerston – Runs Tuesday from 8am-9am. Participants meet in the Palmerston Shopping Centre Eatery. The program is sponsored by the Palmerston Leisure Centre, Upper Crust, Palmerston City Council and the Palmerston Shopping Centre. One of the most popular walks is around the golf course.
Alice Springs – Runs Wednesdays from 7.00am – 8.00am. Participants meet centre stage at the Alice Plaza Shopping Centre. The program is sponsored by the Alice Springs town council, the YMCA and Piccollo’s, who offer food and drink specials. Participants receive a free T-shirt after 10 walks.
Casuarina - Runs Mondays from 7.30am – 8.30am. Participants meet at the information desk at Casuarina Square. The program is sponsored by Athletes Foot, Casuarina Square and Muffin Break who offer reduced rate drinks and free fruit platters. Participants receive a free T-shirt after 10 walks.
