About the artist
The art and accompanying artwork information that appears here and on other pages of the Indigenous HeartInfoNet web resource has been obtained from the Culcha Disc: Australian Indigenous Images Vol 1 (more... »). The artist is:
Errol Roberts
Born
in 1953 in Worrabinda, (local Aboriginal word for 'where the
kangaroo sits down'), Errol comes from the Tjuri language
group of Carnavon Gorge, Central Queensland.
Errol's art is based on Tjun Tjudi Dreaming (sometimes called Eungie) - pronounced noon-gee (designs), and incorporates cross-hatching as the core element.
These designs find their origins from Aboriginal paintings that can be seen on the sandstone walls of the Aboriginal Dreaming Place in Carnavon Gorge, said to be dated between forty and sixty thousand years old.
Many of Errol's artworks include paintings of Tjun Tjudi's - male and female spirit creatures known to come out at dusk. They inform local Aborigines of ceremonies and lores that enable spiritual well being.
Errol also makes Aboriginal artifacts - a skill he learnt from watching the elders of his clan. He now paints Aboriginal art on canvas.
