Launch of the new Internet site: Working with Indigenous peoples with
disability
The new Internet site Working
with Indigenous peoples with disability was launched at the Very,
Very, Very Remote Allied Health Professional's conference in Katherine,
NT on 28 September. It provides up-to-date information on resources for
allied health professionals and carers who work with Indigenous people
with a disability. The site is the first of its kind in Australia and
seeks to reduce the social and geographic barriers experienced by Indigenous
Australians with a disability (particularly those living in remote areas)
and their professional and personal carers.
The site contains:
- Information on how to establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Tips for visitors to remote communities
- Information about disability-related equipment
- A database containing contact information for workers
- Lists of resources for allied health workers working in the 'bush'
- A comprehensive bibliography
- Links to other useful sites
- Stories about Indigenous people with disabilities and those who work
with them
The site has been developed with funding support from the Commonwealth
Department of Health and aged Care's Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander Health and is auspiced by the Crippled Children's Association
of SA.
