Leaping into the next century - reassessment of an Aboriginal Medical Service's internal structure to address community demands.

WuChopperen Aboriginal Medical Service has serviced the Indigenous community of Cairns for 22 years. Since WuChopperen's establishment this organisation has maintained its position in the local Indigenous people concerning their health. The Board of Directors has acknowledged the importance of revisiting a number of key areas within the organisation foundations and committed themselves to addressing these issues. Subsequently, the organisation is undergoing changes to the constitution, restructing of the organisation, obtaining accreditation and the development of a strategic plan and certified work agreement. WuChopperen has employed a local Aboriginal project officer to assist the Board of Directors and staff in achieving these objectives. The Board of Directors recognises that staff can contribute vital information and. has encouraged their participation and input at various levels and in doing so have also encouraged ownership of these organisational changes.

This presentation will provide an overview of the organisation and will discuss the goals and objectives from the strategic plan linking them closely with the five principles of the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion.
