Conflicts and challenges in Indigenous mental health research.

Indigenous peoples in Aotearoa and Australia are among the most researched in the world. As Tuhiwi Smith (1999) notes 'research is implicated in the worst excesses of colonialism'. Research into Indigenous health therefore raises many challenges, ethical dilemmas and conflicts including rationale for, design of, and ownership of the research. Researchers who wish to make a positive difference must think carefully about these issues.

This paper will present the challenges and conflicts arising from current research undertaken by RUIMHER from an Indigenous and non-Indigenous point of view.
