Karlene Dwyer
Kalaya Purro Cultural Awareness Training Program.

The Kalaya Purro Programme was funded during 1997-2000 to develop a cross cultural awareness program in Koori history, culture and health. The program is a key strategy in improving mainstream health service provision to Indigenous people. The program is based on the principles of cross cultural training being provided by local Koori community members on a regional basis.

Guiding Principles: The Kalaya Purro Program is based on principles which ensure that the program:

  • focuses on the experiences of Aboriginal people in Victoria;
  • is about empowerment, involving local Aboriginal communities in the design and delivery of training courses in their area;
  • has and will continue to create employment and training for Aboriginal people, developing a work force of Kooris across Victoria who are experienced and trained in the delivery of cultura1 awareness programs;
  • respects and strengthens Koori community processes and culture, ensuring that relevant local content is taught by the most appropriate community members;
  • is based on best practice with workshop content and presentation of a consistent high quality;
  • facilitates the development of partnership agreements and policy change at statewide, regional and local levels; and
  • is developing the implemented business plan which will ensure the future sustainability of the program beyond the funding period.
