Indigenous Workforce Management Strategy: careers in Queensland Health.
Introduction: Queensland Health
is seeking to recruit, retain and provide career pathways for Indigenous
people throughout its workforce. By focusing on Indigenous workforce development,
Queensland Health will be better positioned to:
- work with Indigenous people
to improve their health status;
- build increased diversity
and capacity for innovative thinking across the workforce; and
- demonstrate commitment to
the spirit of participation.
This project will provide a
framework for districts to work with educational institutions and Indigenous
communities to encourage more young Indigenous people to aspire to health
careers and to improve recruitment, retention and development of Indigenous
employees.
Purpose: To encourage and support
Indigenous students through school and university into health careers.
Objective: Increased level
of knowledge on health career choices among Indigenous students.
Methods used:
- Development of promotional
material, such as a 'Careers Video' with Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander Staff being interviewed about their jobs and roles within Queensland
Health, and posters and brochures with recognised Indigenous Health
Staff members on them.
- Networking with Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander District Community Education councillors
within Education Queensland school career guidance officers and committees
and, ASSPA Committees.
- Indigenous and non-Indigenous
health staff to visit local schools and conduct career information workshops
where a large number of Indigenous students have been identified.
- Developed a work experience
program for interested students within a range of Queensland Health
Divisions.
