Aboriginal Health 2000: Cultural partnerships - unified in health
29-30 June 2000, Sheraton Perth Hotel, Perth, Western Australia.

Anna Sinclair and Ann Jacobs
Otitis media.

Conductive hearing loss is one of the most significant barriers to achieving good literacy outcomes for indigenous children. The literature clearly indicates that one of the most important factors, which predicts the impact of the disease on development, is the child's access to appropriate medical management. This workshop will present current theory on the manner in which conductive hearing loss affects infants and school age children. It will also present the results of a pilot study conducted at an inner city primary school with a predominantly Aboriginal population. The importance of appropriate healthworker and medical support cannot be underestimated.
