Preston-Thomas A (2004) End stage renal disease (ESRD) is a significant health issue for Indigenous Australians. It has an enormous impact on quality of life and very high mortality and morbidity rates. Cass et al (2001a) found marked regional variation in new cases of ESRD in Indigenous Australians from 1993-8. In this dissertation I determine the extent of regional variation in treated ESRD in Indigenous Australians during the study period 1993-2001. The indirectly standardised incidence ratio of treated ESRD relative to the incidence in the total Australian population is calculated in order to compare rates between states and territories, between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Commission (ATSIC) regions, and to compare rates in regions with low, medium and high proportions of Indigenous population. I ascertain how many of the Indigenous patients commencing renal replacement therapy (RRT) from 1999 to 2001 had to move from their original community of residence, in order to access RRT. The Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry (ANZDATA) was used as a source and facilitator of data collection.
