Patterns, trends, and increasing disparities in mortality for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal infants born in Western Australia, 1980-2001: population database study.
Lancet;367(9524):1758-1766

Using data from the Western Australia Maternal and Child Health Research Database (MCHRDB), this article examines trends in infant mortality rates (all-cause and cause-specific) for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal infants born in Western Australia from 1980 to 2001. Findings draw attention to the higher death rates among Aboriginal infants compared with their non-Aboriginal peers. This highlights the need to work in partnership with Aboriginal communities to implement and assess policies to reduce the continuing social and economic disadvantage faced by Aboriginal families.

Thomas DP, Anderson IPS (2006)
Use of emergency departments by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Emergency Medicine Australasia;18:68-76

This article reviews published literature relating to Emergency Department (ED) care of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The literature was found through searching databases, Emergency Medicine (1994-2004), two websites and three bibliographies. It was demonstrated that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples attend ED about twice as often as other Australians. However, many choose to walk out before being seen, possibly indicating that there is greater Indigenous dissatisfaction with ED care. It is suggested that ED staff and the Indigenous hospital liaison staff collaborate more closely with each other combined with regular monitoring of routinely collected ED data. Together they have the potential to improve ED care and therefore contribute to improvements in Indigenous health.
