A decade of Aboriginal health in the Medical Journal of Australia
(MJA): how can we improve?
The Medical Journal of Australia (MJA) has been
published fortnightly since 1914, aiming to be 'the premier forum
for information and commentary on clinical medicine and health
care in Australia'. Over this same period, the mortality and morbidity
of most Australians have improved, the notable exception being
the Aboriginal peoples whose mortality and morbidity constantly
exceeds that of other Australians. We conducted this review to
quantify the amount of material published in the MJA about Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander Health over the decade of 1989 to 1998
and, secondly, to determine the number, percentage and position
in authorship order of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander authors
writing about Aboriginal health in that period. This presentation
also will describe data currently being collected about authorship.
