This booklet has been designed for family and friends concerned about or supporting someone who is at risk of suicide or self harm. The booklet provides important information for identifying:

  • life situations that may result in risky behaviour
  • risky behaviour
  • risky thoughts and feelings
  • ways that friends or family can help
  • ways to offer support
  • sources for seeking help

The booklet also offers valuable cultural advice on 'looking after each other', and 'who we are and why we're important to our community'.

Palliative care resource kit

Providing culturally appropriate palliative care to Indigenous Australians. Resource kit.

Funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing as part of its National Palliative Care Program, this resource kit has been developed to support the provision of palliative care to Indigenous patients, their families and communities, and to encourage service providers to examine their practice for cultural appropriateness. The kit is the result of direct consultation with palliative care providers and Indigenous people and communities throughout Australia. It contains a folder with information addressing: an introduction to the kit; practice principles; use of the resource; discussion paper; and course information. A CD-ROM is also included and contains additional information relating to cultural safety, cultural diversity, and practice examples.

Sniffing and the brain

The Sniffing and the brain kit has been developed by the Menzies School of Health Research to assist youth and social workers delivering rehabilitation and education programs to Indigenous people on the hazards of petrol sniffing.

It includes a 40-page, A3 flipchart with illustrations explaining how petrol sniffing affects the brain and how people can recover from some of the effects of petrol sniffing.

The grog book

The Commonwealth Government has funded a new edition of The grog book, a resource aimed at helping Indigenous communities and health workers better manage alcohol-related problems. The grog book: strengthening Indigenous community action on alcohol [revised edition], provides practical advice on how to manage alcohol problems at the community level and how to increase community awareness of alcohol abuse. First published in 1998, this revised edition includes new information on successful programs undertaken by Indigenous communities. The grog book will be distributed to Indigenous health services, health workers, Indigenous community organisations, drug and alcohol services, and State and Territory governments, and is available on request from the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing.

The Think about them 2 resources for kidney health have been developed by Kidney Health Australia specifically for Indigenous communities. The series consists of a flier, a mini fact card, a flipchart and a video, which are currently in the process of review. The resources provide concise and clear information about the functions that the kidneys provide, how the kidneys can be damaged, what clinical tests should be done regularly, and how to keep the kidneys healthy.
