Aboriginal road safety stakeholder implementation manual Aboriginal Road User Taskforce (2005)
In response to the over-representation of Aboriginal people in road crash statistics, the Road Safety Council of Western Australia has introduced the Aboriginal road safety stakeholder: implementation manual, as a means of outlining contributing issues and circumstances, and identifying practical strategies for minimising deaths and injuries on Western Australian roads. The implementation manual is part of the current five-year strategy Arriving safely: Western Australian road safety strategy 2003-2007, which identifies pedestrian safety, unsafe travel, and drink driving, as the main road safety concerns identified in Aboriginal road crash statistics. The manual and associated resources are designed to assist road safety stakeholders and others to identify priorities for action, and the most appropriate approaches to achieve successful outcomes. Like most Australians, they have never been exposed to life in a remote Indigenous community, but during their placement they move beyond their professional roles to make personal connections with some of the locals. Issues arise due to the relationships they develop and the professional distance they are told they need to maintain in order to practice professionally. The video offers an insight into the practical realities of student placements and providing Western medical services to Indigenous communities. The posters were designed to: empower Indigenous Sistergirls and transgender communities by raising HIV/AIDS awareness; address underlying issues such as isolation and discrimination; and promote positive self-esteem which in turn promotes individuals to engage in safer sexual practices, such as condom usage. The posters were developed in response to the National Indigenous gay and transgender consultation report and sexual health strategy, as was the AFAO strategy for responding to sexual abuse of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander gay men and Sistergirls. Yarning about diabetes - pamphlet and word puzzle Western Australian Diabetes Strategy (2005) In 2003, the Health Promotion Directorate, in collaboration with the Office of Aboriginal Health undertook a project that aimed to increase the knowledge of Aboriginal people about the signs of type 2 diabetes, and to encourage Aboriginal people to undertake preventive behaviours for type 2 diabetes. The project resulted in the production of two resources, an information pamphlet and a related interactive word puzzle. A quantitative evaluation of these resources was conducted in May 2005, supporting the production and distribution of both the resources, and the possible future development of a similar pamphlet addressing 'Heart Health'.
