Bauert P, McMaugh E, Martin CM, Smylie JK (2003) Bryce S, Diplock R, Dewing J (2002) This article discusses some of the difficulties associated with the treatment of suppurating ear disease in Aboriginal children. In particular, the advantages of administering Celestone VG and the reasons for poor adherence associated with the use of ear drops are discussed. Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet abstract Cass A, Cunningham J, Hoy W (2002) This article examines the relationship between socioeconomic disadvantage and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) among Indigenous Australians according to ATSIC regions. The study found that populations in disadvantaged areas have higher rates of ESRD and the article outlines the possible implications of these results. Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet
abstract Clough AR, Alexander I, Currie B (2002) The focus of this article is liver toxicity resulting from some forms of kava use. International evidence is provided which outlines the hazards of kava use and highlights the potential risk to the health of Indigenous people in Arnhem Land who consume kava. Evidence of seizures associated with kava toxicity and withdrawal are also documented. Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet abstract Cunningham J (2002) De Costa CM (2002) Ewald DP, Hall GV, Franks CC (2003) Fisher DA, Huffam SE (2003) Harley D, Hanna JN, Hills SL, Bates JR, Smith HV
(2002) This article documents cases of invasive meningococcal disease diagnosed and acquired in north Queensland over the five year period from 1995 to 1999. Information on Indigenous status, clinical presentation, mortality, serogroup, serotype, serosubtype and antibiotic sensitivities was obtained. Indigenous Australians were three times more likely to acquire invasive meningococcal disease than non-Indigenous Australians but the incidence and risk of invasive meningococcal disease among Indigenous people was lower than that reported in the preceding five year period. Changes in the epidemiology of invasive meningococcal disease in north Queensland are discussed. Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet abstract Hills S, Hanna J, Murphy D (2002) Kukuruzovic R, Brewster D (2002) This article details the findings of a clinical study conducted at Royal Darwin Hospital on Aboriginal children admitted with acute diarrhoea and/or malnutrition. Three different low-lactose milk formulas were trialed for their impact on weight gain, diarrhoeal severity and intestinal permeability during the initial recovery phases of diarrhoeal disease or moderate malnutrition. IK, Flynn KA (2003) Markey P (2002) This article outlines the susceptibility of Aboriginal children in the Top End to contracting cryptosporidiosis during the wet season. Committee (2002) Ring IT, Brown N (2002) Roche P, Krause V (2002) Stewart D, Markey P (2002) This article reports the coverage rates for pneumococcal vaccination among adults in the Northern Territory and Central Australia. Aboriginal people are particularly vulnerable to invasive pneumococcal disease and form the majority of vaccine recipients. Information on current vaccines, schedules, disease control registers and past outbreaks is provided. Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet abstract Tsey K, Patterson D, Whiteside M, Baird L, Baird B
(2002) This paper analyses the formative stages of a participatory action research process aimed to engage and support members of the Yarrabah Men's Health Group in planning, implementing and evaluating their activities. It explores the effects of the process, the perceptions of community development in Indigenous settings and the roles of academic researchers in community-driven initiatives.
