Website reviews

This section of the Bulletin provides summaries of websites of relevance to Indigenous health. The summaries are intended to make users aware of new and/or revised sites, and we do not attempt a formal review of the sites. If you know of a new and/or revised site that would be of interest to other users, please contact us.

Aboriginal Drug and Alcohol Council (SA) Inc (ADAC)

URL: www.adac.org.au

What is ADAC?

ADAC describes itself as 'an information and advisory centre for the Aboriginal community, the wider community and to relevant professionals and institutions, on substance misuse issues'. Its mission is to 'ensure the development of effective programs to reduce harm related to substance misuse in Aboriginal communities, in such a way as to promote and foster pride, dignity, identity and achievement in Aboriginal society, and advocate and actively pursue the philosophy and principles of Aboriginal spiritual, cultural, social, economic and political re-empowerment, self-determination and self-management.'

ADAC is the only statewide peak Indigenous substance misuse organisation in Australia, representing 28 Aboriginal community organisations from across South Australia. ADAC provides 'responses to a range of state and national committees and strategies, helps communities deal with the problems associated with substance misuse, develops health promotional materials, undertakes research on its own and in collaboration with various universities and key national research organisations'.

What is the website about?

The website provides information about the organisation, including its history and vision. Visitors to the site can find out about ADAC's projects, contact their staff members and access resource material.

Who is the site aimed at?

The ADAC site is aimed at the Aboriginal community, the wider community, relevant professionals and institutions. The site provides useful information for anyone interested in Indigenous substance use issues.

Should I check it out?

The ADAC website is a compact site, which makes navigation, using the left-aligned roll over menu, quite straightforward.

Simple yet effective use of colour has been applied to the site creating an attractive background from which to read the content. The use, throughout the site, of an original painting by Max Mansell, makes the site visually stimulating and pleasant to 'surf' around.

A list of useful links to Indigenous specific and health-related sites is provided, as is an email notification service for the ADAC newsletter (simply submit your email address).

Overall, this is a well-designed and managed website that provides useful and user-friendly information to anyone interested in Indigenous substance use issues. Well worth checking out!
