Breast self examination. Keep strong women - look after yourself healthy
ways
The Territory Government Health Services have produced a leaflet specifically
for Aboriginal women explaining about the importance of breast self-examination
(BSE) and when it should be conducted. The leaflet includes diagrams
demonstrating how and when women should conduct a breast self-examination.

Diabetes and heart disease: what you need to know
This booklet for Indigenous people has been produced by the Diabetes
and Heart Health Team at Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service in Perth.
The booklet contains a number of leaflets which all provide information
related to preventing diabetes and heart disease. Definitions are
provided for diabetes, hypoglycaemia, blood pressure, angina and stroke.
Other leaflets included in the booklet are:

Keep sight of your eyes! Get your eyes checked
The Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO)
Eye Health Project has developed a poster to reinforce the message of
regular eye checks for Koori people. The artwork is by local Aboriginal
artist Lyn Briggs and the design shows the need to keep an eye on your
health and that of your family.

'Look after your kids: use seat belts and child restraints'
A poster and leaflet have been produced to encourage the use of seat
belts and child restraints by Indigenous children. Nearly four times as
many Aboriginal children than non-Aboriginal children are hurt in car
crashes because they do not wear seat belts. The leaflet shows the different
child restraints which should be used by children when traveling in cars.
Contact details for further information on the use, selection and fitting
of child restraints are also provided.
The leaflet and poster were produced in Western Australia by the Western
Australian Municipal Association, Commonwealth Department of Transport
and Regional Services, Roadwise and the Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service
Inc.

Petrol sniffing and other solvents - a community resource
The Aboriginal Drug and Alcohol Council of South Australia Inc. has produced
this manual covering all aspects of petrol sniffing and other solvent
use in Indigenous communities. The manual consists of a number of booklets
which contain basic health information, examples of successful programs,
teaching resources and information about where to go for further assistance.
The manual is presented as a boxed set which includes:
- Booklet 1: Plain Language Summary - for people interested in learning
about petrol sniffing or other solvent use
- Booklet 2: Information for Health and Community Members - contains
more detailed information about petrol sniffing and is for workers
who are helping communities to deal with sniffing issues
- Booklet 3: Community Development - for workers and includes a workshop
outline
- Booklet 4: Other Solvents - for workers who are working in communities
where sniffing of other solvents (paint, glue) are an issue.
- The Brain Story was developed in Central Australia by the Petrol
Link-Up Project (Territory Health Services) and uses Aboriginal pictures
to show the effects of petrol sniffing.
- Petrol Sniffing in Aboriginal Communities: A Review of Interventions
(by Peter d'Abbs and Sarah MacLean) is a review of published and unpublished
literature addressing petrol sniffing in Aboriginal communities in
Australia.

SIDS guide for Indigenous families - video and brochure
'1,2,3 ways to reduce the risk of SIDS: A guide for Indigenous
families' has been produced by SIDS Western Australia and is particularly
useful for Health workers who are working in communities. The brochure
outlines simple yet significant strategies to try to decrease the
number of Indigenous babies dying of SIDS.
The video which costs $32.50, clearly identifies the risks for
SIDS and how to counteract them, as well as providing the reasons
behind the advice.
