Alcohol management plans were among the topics of discussion when new Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Minister Glen Elmes met far north Queensland (Qld) mayors in Cairns on 5 May 2012.
The management plans have been in place in 19 Indigenous Qld communities since 2002, in a bid to reduce alcohol-related violence. Before the election, current Premier Campbell Newman promised to review the plans, which he said were not working.
A State Government review of the management plan laws is under way, and Minister Elmes has asked the Qld mayors to get back to him with suggestions for new strategies to manage alcohol in their communities.
