Mary honoured for healthy ambition

Date posted: 17 June 2011

Mary Elizabeth Martin was acknowledged for her service to the Indigenous community in the Queen's birthday 2011 honours list. Ms Martin always thought the work she did for Indigenous health 'wasn't too bad', but to be appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia is 'something else'.

The Queenslander said she feels strongly about changing the professional standards for Indigenous people and feels lucky to have been part of establishing the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation for Health Education and Training. Through her involvement in the Queensland Aboriginal Islander Health Council (QAIHC) she is able to draw attention to problems surrounding Indigenous and rural health in Australia.

'The more people who have an awareness, the better,' Ms Martin said.

Ms Martin will receive the award at a ceremony at Parliament House later this year.
