Indigenous academic, Professor Larissa Behrendt has been named the New South Wales Australian of the year for her work on Indigenous human rights issues. Professor Behrendt commented that non-Indigenous Australians can be inspired by Aboriginal people who focus on the human rights of their own people. Professor Behrendt also highlighted areas that she believes could do with improvements to policies such as rising suicide rates, increased unemployment and increased violence. Professor Behrendt has been shortlisted for the 2011 Australian of the year, the results of which will be announced in January.
