Minister announces $24 million to 'close the gap' in Indigenous literacy and numeracy
The Minister for School Education Peter Garrett has announced $24 million in funding for 15 new intensive literacy and numeracy projects. The projects will be implemented over the next two years across government and non-government schools. The funded organisations and projects include:
- Queensland Department of Education and Training, Department of Education and Children's Services SA, Department of Education and Training NT, Queensland Catholic Education Commission, Catholic Education Office NT, Australian Primary Principals Association - Principals as literacy leaders with Indigenous communities - $2,894,390
- ACT Department of Education and Training - ACT Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander student community partnership - $500,000
- NSW Department of Education - Connecting to country - $2,141,700
- NSW Catholic Education Commission, Diocese of Lismore, CEO Diocese of Lismore - QuickSmart numeracy - $465,760
- NSW Catholic Education Commission, Diocese Maitland-Newcastle - Closing the gap: standing tall in literacy and numeracy - $405,000
- NSW Catholic Education Commission, Diocese of Parramatta - Wingra Byalabrignu Wongl: learning together as one - $826,458
- Association of Independent Schools of NSW - Closing the gap in NSW independent schools - $1,000,000
- Queensland Department of Education and Training - Moving together - $470,000
- Queensland Department of Education and Training, Queensland Catholic Education Commission - Bridging the language gap: expanding the leadership in language program, ESL sssentials workshop and the adopt-a-school initiative - $2,966,246
- Tasmania Department of Education - Raising the bar: closing the gap Indigenous initiative - $1,897,330
- Northern Territory Department of Education and Training Catholic Education Office NT - Literacy and numeracy for productive participation pathways - $2,965,000
- Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, Catholic Education Commission of Victoria , Independent Schools Victoria - Technology enriched curriculum project for Indigenous students - $1,322,000
- Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, Catholic Education Commission of Victoria , Independent Schools Victoria - ERIK (early reading intervention knowledge) numeracy - $947,000
- Western Australian Department of Education, the Catholic Education Office of Western Australia and the Association of Independent Schools of Western Australia - Literacy and english as a second language in the early years - $3,673,730
- Western Australian Department of Education, the Catholic Education Office of Western Australia and the Association of Independent Schools of Western Australia - funding to identified focus schools - $1,500,564
There is also one program for SA with $2 million allocated funds that is yet to be determined.
