Caring for country project receives NAIDOC award

Date posted: 15 July 2014

A Caring for country project in the Kimberley has won a NAIDOC award for bringing together traditional Indigenous knowledge and modern science.

The Wunambal Gaambera people run the Uunguu healthy country project near Kalumburu, on the far north-eastern tip of WA. The project aims to improve the health of the local environment, with focus areas such as rainforests, kangaroos and wallabies, rock art and marine turtles and dugong.

The project was recognised for the way it embraces traditional knowledge, rules and responsibilities and combines them with modern science and technology.
