Call for human rights-based approach to alcohol policy development

Date posted: 23 June 2014

The Social Justice Commissioner, Mick Gooda, says the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People can provide guidelines for processes in developing alcohol policy.

Mr Gooda says there is an indisputable link between alcohol and violence in First Nations communities,

He has praised the Queensland Government for allowing communities to decide on their own alcohol strategies. But Mr Gooda says the approach would only work if all community members are listened to, not just those who agree with government policy.
