Community spirit the winner at Carbal family fun day

Date posted: 9 June 2014

A fast-paced but friendly-spirited touch football match between police and members of Toowoomba's Indigenous community typified the positive atmosphere of the Carbal family fun day held in May.

The Indigenous Community team took out this year's Queensland Health Community Cup, receiving the winning trophy from Gold Coast Titans National Rugby League (NRL) stars Brad Tighe, Maurice Blair and Albert Kelly.

Carbal Medical Centre CEO Dr Harry Randhawa said holding the annual touch football match as part of the family fun day was a great way to celebrate Toowoomba's Indigenous community.

It was also an opportunity to pass on important health messages such as the negative effects of smoking tobacco.

'The big message is not smoking, Dr Randhawa said. It is a big contributor to chronic disease."

Good nutrition and exercise were also encouraged throughout the day. Activities included art classes and face painting as well as hip hop dance workshops.
