New Cape York health centre to address chronic disease

Date posted: 21 November 2013

The Apunipima Cape York Health Council is hoping that a new facility at Kowanyama will help to reduce the burden of chronic disease in the next generation. The new facility is to take advice from community members in shaping programs to tackle obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Senior medical advisor Dr Mark Wenitong says the mortality rate for heart disease is up to four times higher in the Indigenous communities around Cape York, and early intervention is needed.
